The Djenne Mosque
Two weeks ago we traveled to one of our favorite Malian towns of Segou. Then we headed up to Djenne - a beautiful town reknowned for its old mosque and amazing banco architecture (a UNESCO World Heritage site). We decided to use an alternate route to return to Segou - driving three hours through a very desolate and dry area to the west of Djenne, and crossing the Niger at a town called Massina. Upon arrival across the Niger from Massina, crossing the Niger in our car did not seem too evident...we drove through sand and right up to the banks of the Niger and finally saw how to get on the ferry...but not until after a few moments of thinking we'd be stuck on the wrong side of the river. A few photos from the trip...

We loved this - Donkey Park on a Market Day (sort of like a parking lot at the mall!)

Crossing the Niger - phew... a bit more complicated than we thought!

Our sendoff after visiting a Peul village outside of Djenne...needless to say we were quite popular.
